Family is one of Julie's greatest blessings. She and Poker are proud parents of two sons who are both involved in ministry. Their son Jay and his wife Lauren live in Greenwood with their two children, while their son Jarred and his wife Megan live in Simpsonville with their three children. Nothing brings Julie and Poker more joy than spending time with their five grandchildren, who affectionately know them as "Shug" and "Poppy.”
While Newnan is home, Julie and Poker are always ready for their next adventure—especially if it includes a road trip to see family, time with their grandchildren, or an opportunity to encourage others. Wherever they go, they strive to leave people feeling a little more hopeful, a little more joyful, and a little more reminded of God's faithfulness.
Meet Julie
Julie loves connecting with people—
and she especially loves talking about Jesus!
Julie Boyd has been sharing encouragement, laughter, and hope with audiences for as long as she can remember. A natural storyteller with a contagious sense of humor, she has a special gift for connecting with people in a way that feels genuine, uplifting, and unforgettable. Whether she is speaking at a conference, sharing a heartfelt story, or bringing one of her ventriloquist friends to life on stage, Julie has a unique ability to make people laugh, reflect, and grow in their faith.
After earning her undergraduate degree from William Carey University and a master's degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Julie began a lifelong journey of ministry and service. Over the years, she has spoken at women's conferences, retreats, church events, ministry gatherings, and special programs across the country. Her messages blend biblical truth, practical encouragement, and plenty of humor, creating an atmosphere where people feel both inspired and understood.
Many audiences also know Julie through her beloved ventriloquist friends, Miss Mildred and BC. Together they bring joy, laughter, and meaningful lessons to children, families, churches, and nonprofit events. Whether speaking to a room full of women or a sanctuary filled with children, Julie's heart remains the same—to encourage others and point them toward Christ.
Julie recently retired from her role as Director of Parent and Family Programs at Samford University, where she spent years helping students and families navigate important seasons of life. While retirement has opened the door to new adventures and opportunities, her passion for ministry and encouraging others remains as strong as ever.
Since 1982, Julie has shared life and ministry with her husband, Dr. Charles "Poker" Boyd. Poker serves as President and Founder of Student Ministry Essentials, and together they have spent decades investing in churches, students, families, and ministry leaders. Their partnership has been marked by faith, laughter, and a shared commitment to serving others. They make their home in Newnan, Georgia, but their hearts are often on the road, wherever God opens the next door for ministry.
